Bitcoin Faucet

Have you ever heard of a Bitcoin faucet? Want to know what it is? A Bitcoin faucet is a website that will provide free Bitcoins, or, more accurately, a portion of a Bitcoin. Gavin Andresen started the original concept, but the one he created is not currently in operation.

Here is a list of several sites that provide this service (and for even more, this site has an extensive list of Bitcoin faucets):

The one at appspot is currently closed.

The faucet at herokuapp.com is currently still functioning and providing small amounts of Bitcoins for free.

The Bitcoin faucet at bitcoin.st is still working, however, in order to receive 0.0015 Free Bitcoins, you will need to enter your cell phone number and be able to receive a text message. This author has not used the faucet, as it’s likely that once a cell phone number has been entered, advertisements will be sent by text to the cell phone. User beware. Most things that claim to be “free” have some sort of cost involved, even if that cost does not come in the form of money. To my way of thinking, annoyance from a steady flow of unwanted text advertisement sent to my cell phone is a very high cost, and not worth the reward of a small amount of “free” Bitcoins.
